Bishop Fritz and Etta Mae Mutti
ALBERT FREDERICK MUTTI III

Albert Frederick Mutti III was born in Hopkins, MO on February 13, 1938, the son of Albert
Frederick Mutti, Jr. And Phyllis Turner Mutti.  All his life he has been identified by the
nickname “Fritz”.  He is married to Etta Mae McClurg Mutti and they are the parents of
three sons, Tim, Fred and Marty.

Fritz Mutti holds academic degrees from Central Methodist College (A.B., 1960), Garrett
Evangelical Theological Seminary (M.Div., 1963) and Saint Paul School of Theology (D.
Min., 1975).  Central Methodist College and Baker University awarded him honorary
doctorates.

Fritz Mutti was admitted on trial in the former Missouri Conference and was admitted to full
connection in the Missouri west Conference in 1963.  He was ordained a deacon in 1961
and an elder in 1963 by Bishop Eugene Frank.

In a variety of appointments, Fritz served in Missouri and Indiana.  He served a student
appointment in Leroy, IN while a student at Garrett.  He was pastor of the Union Star-Star
Chapel-Oak Grove circuit for two years after graduating from seminary.  Moving from
there to Savannah, MO he became the founding pastor of Crossroads Ecumenical
Cooperative Parish.  For eight years he was a member of the Missouri west Conference
staff serving as Director of Education and Camping and as Conference Council Director.  
In 1982 he was appointed senior pastor of First UMC in Blue Springs.  Bishop W. T.
Handy, Jr. appointed him as Superintendent to the Central District in 1987 and to the
Kansas City North District in 1989.  During these years he was a delegate to five
Jurisdictional Conferences and four General Conferences.  He led the General
Conference delegation in 1984, 1988 and 1992.  He served as a director of the General
Board of Discipleship (1980-1988), the General Board of Global Ministries (1988-1992),
and the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns (1996-2004).  
He served as Chairperson of the General Task Force on Concern for Workers (1996-
2000) and President of the General Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious
Concerns (2000-2004).

Fritz Mutti was elected to the episcopacy by the South Central Jurisdictional Conference in
1992 and assigned to the Kansas Area (1992-2004).

In retirement he serves as a member of the Coordinating Council of Churches Uniting in
Christ.  He is also employed as a faculty member at Saint Paul School of Theology.  He
and Etta Mae serve as coordinators of the UM Global AIDS Fund.


ETTA MAE MCCLURG MUTTI

Etta Mae McClurg was born in Hopkins, MO on July 16, 1938, the third of six children born
to Ivan L. McClurg and Ruth King McClurg.  She was raised on a farm, going to a one-
room country school for the first eight years of her education.  She graduated from
Hopkins High School and was employed as a secretary for a year before attending
Northwest Missouri State University.  She and Fritz were high school sweethearts and
were married on June 7, 1959.  To this union was born three sons: Timothy Allen, John
Frederick and Martin Kent.
Etta Mae has spent most of her career as a church secretary.  She was also called to be a
youth director at Christ UMC in Independence, MO.  Her typing skills led her to a job as a
contract typist, which developed into the ownership of a home based typing business.

She has served on many church committees and became certified as a Laboratory
Leader for elementary children.  From this certification she has led workshops on helping
teachers sharpen their skills, curriculum planning and storytelling.  She has also led
several women’s retreats.

Etta Mae has served on the SAVE Foundation Board in Kansas City, MO, has been a
board member of AIDS National Interfaith Network (ANIN), a national organization giving
support and leadership to HIV/AIDS organizations and worked at the Topeka AIDS Project
and Kansas Ecumenical Ministries in Topeka, KS   She has been a volunteer at a variety
of locations, a favorite being the public library.  She has also published a small book of
recipes for the clergy spouses.

Fritz and Etta Mae saw two of their sons, Tim and Fred, die from the complications of AIDS
with Tim dying in December, 1990 and Fred succumbing to the illness in 1991.  
Consequently, they have written a book about their experiences entitled “Dancing In A
Wheelchair”.  They also co-authored an article for high school curriculum called “To The
Point.”  Their third son, Marty, lives in Arkansas City, KS and is manager and co-owner of
the radio station KSOK.
